MTO German-Australian Opera Grant

Winner of both the 2021 John Wegner and Joan Sutherland & Richard Bonynge Bel Canto award(s), bass-baritone James Young completed a Masters of Music at the Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg under the tutelage of Professor Susanne Kelling where he received the highest possible grade for his final Master’s recital. During his time in Germany in 2023, James debuted the title role in Rachmaninoff’s Aleko, Sprecher in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte and Orff’s seldomly presented opera De temporum fine comoedia – Das Spiel vom Ende der Zeiten in the role of Anachoreten.

 In 2022, James presented Masetto in Don GIovanni and Baculus in Lortzing’s opera Der Wildschütz and is a scholarship holder with the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation which began in 2022 with Korean accompanist Dahyon Min. He also had Liederabends in Bayreuth and Nuremberg. 

In the 2021 season, he sang Okeanos in Orff’s Prometheus in Bayreuth, Graf von Eberbach in Der Wildschütz and multiple collaborations with Ensemble Sarband under the direction of Vladimir Ivanoff and with the Polizeiorchester Bayern. In 2021, James sang as bass soloist in Bach’s Matthäus-Passion followed by role debuts as Marullo and Monterone in concert performances of Rigoletto at Schloss Henfenfeld in Germany under the baton of Denette Whitter. James has toured the biggest opera houses in China in the role of Amonasro in Verdi’s Aida, was three times artist in residence with the Bayreuth Young Artist Festival and had the opportunity to collect many dream roles as an emerging Artist in Australia before beginning his studies in Germany, with companies including Lyric Opera of Melbourne, GBD Touring Opera, Millennium Opera and Victorian Opera. James received the 2024 German-Australia Opera Grant and which has been a dream of his since beginning his classical singing studies.
